The Omega Silver Snoopy Speedmaster

The Omega Silver Snoopy Speedmaster

Why Snoopy?

First of all, we need to understand the relationship between the infamous cartoon Snoopy and NASA, the government space administration agency. Who is Snoopy? Snoopy is a sophisticated, book-loving, fictional cartoon beagle (Dog).

NASA adopted Snoopy as their safety mascot in 1968 to help keep astronauts and staff safe during missions and expeditions. The cartoon dog was implemented to keep things light during heavy situations.

The Silver Snoopy Award was also introduced in 1968 with the purpose of celebrating exceptional contributions towards the safety of the mission or team. So far, NASA has given out over 15,700 Silver Snoopy Awards to various individuals, suppliers and employers across many space centres.

How did Omega earn the Silver Snoopy Award?

As many people know, the Omega Speedmaster was the only watch to pass NASA's rigorous testing, and it became an official component of each astronaut's kit in 1965, during the first mission to the moon. Just five years later, Omega was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award for the fatal role it played during the APOLLO 13 mission. When an oxygen tank exploded on board the spacecraft, the Omega Speedmaster was used to time the burns back to Earth. This watch ensured the safety of the astronauts and allowed them to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere, saving their lives.

The Silver Snoopy Award is something that Omega treasure heavily, keeping it at their official museum in Switzerland. It has and will continue to play a major role in their marketing and design process for many years to come.
