Rolex Day-Date Watches: Guide to Everything You Need to Know

Rolex Day-Date: History, Features, and Value (Day-Date 36 & Day-Date 40)

Join us in this blog to discover the history, features and value of the Rolex Day-Date, the “President’s watch” that sits at the top of many watch collector lists.

The History of the Rolex Day-Date (Launch in 1956)

The Rolex Day-Date is also known as the “President” and is often seen as Rolex’s flagship model. It has been worn by many current and former presidents and influential figures, but more importantly, it has become the watch of choice for people who want a clear “winner’s watch” statement.
Rolex introduced the Day-Date at its launch in 1956. It was the first self-winding wristwatch to display the date and the day, with the day of the week spelled and the week spelled out in full on the dial. The day display sits at 12 o’clock, and the date at 3 o’clock is shown through the familiar window.
Since 1956, the Day-Date has evolved through subtle design changes while keeping its core identity intact: an Oyster case, a classic bezel profile, and the signature bracelet.

Day and Date: the Day Disc, Quickset Date, and 26 Languages

One of the defining elements of the Rolex Day-Date watches is the day display. The day of the week written at 12 o’clock is shown on a rotating day disc (sometimes just called the disc) and it’s available in 26 languages, one of the most distinctive “Rolex” details once you notice it.
Modern Day-Date models also benefit from a quickset function. In plain terms: you can use the crown to quickset date and day without cycling the hands around the dial endlessly (a big quality-of-life upgrade for anyone who rotates watches).

Day-Date 36: the Classic President Bracelet and Fluted Bezel

The President was originally released in a classic day-date 36 case size. Early models were crafted in yellow gold, with a fluted bezel and the iconic President bracelet.
A key detail collectors love: the President bracelet is reserved exclusively for the Day-Date range. Modern versions typically use a concealed clasp often referred to as Crownclasp, giving the bracelet a clean, uninterrupted look.

Metals and dials: yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold, platinum

Today, the Day-Date remains exclusively in precious metals, meaning you’ll find it in gold or platinum, including yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold (Rolex’s Everose / rose gold alloy), and platinum. In Rolex terms, you’ll often see “18 ct gold or 950 platinum” discussed when people compare the metals.
The Day-Date is also known for its huge range of dial options, from classic, minimal dials to diamond-set variations. The dial is a major part of the Day-Date’s personality, and it’s one reason collectors build entire watch collection “wish lists” around specific combinations.

Day-Date II and the Shift to Day-Date 40

Day-Date II (2008): the larger Day-Date

The day-date ii was introduced in 2008 to fulfil the demand for larger watches. After a relatively short run, Rolex and many collectors agreed the 41mm case size felt slightly too large and disproportionate on many wrists.

Day-Date 40 (2015): 40 replaced the Day-Date II

Shortly after discontinuing the Day-Date II in 2015, Rolex introduced the day-date 40. The Day-Date 40 replaced the Day-Date II and was instantly a hit due to its better proportions and wearable balance.
If you’re researching references, the day-date reference you’ll see depends on metal and configuration. Modern day-date 40 ref numbers typically sit in the 228xxx family (for example, yellow gold vs Everose vs platinum all have different ref variations).

Features of a Rolex Day-Date (Oyster Case, Bezel Options, and Bracelet)

The Rolex Day-Date features the Oyster case, bezel options (most famously the fluted bezel, but some configurations also use a smooth bezel), and the President bracelet.
The watch is crafted only in precious metal, yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold, or platinum, and while the Day-Date has appeared on different bracelets historically, the modern standard is the three-link President bracelet with its hidden clasp.
This blend of an Oyster case and precious-metal execution is a huge part of the Day-Date’s appeal: it’s robust enough for daily wear, but clearly positioned as Rolex’s statement piece.

Rolex Day-Date Movement: Calibre 3255 (70-hour Power Reserve)

Both current Day-Date sizes (the Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40) feature the self-winding calibre 3255 (also written 3255). This movement is developed and manufactured by Rolex and is built for stability and performance.
In older Day-Date generations, you’ll also find movements with a 48-hour power reserve, which is one reason many collectors describe the modern 3255 as a meaningful technical step forward.

Vintage Day-Date References and the Rolex Oysterquartz Era

For collectors who love history, early references matter. Classic early Rolex Day-Date ref discussions often mention 6510 and 6511 as important early-era references from the launch period.
And if you’re a collector who enjoys unusual chapters of Rolex history, there’s also the Rolex Oysterquartz era, including the Oysterquartz Day-Date. These models sit firmly in the 1970s and 1980s and offer a very different feel compared to the modern mechanical Oyster Perpetual Day-Date.

How Much Does a Rolex Day-Date Cost?

The Rolex Day-Date has a significant price range because of the age of the model, the rarity of specific configurations, and the materials used to make them. For example, a platinum Day-Date 40 with a diamond bezel and diamond-paved dial will cost far more than a simpler white gold Day-Date 40 with a plain dial.
This price difference can be amplified in the secondary market as supply and demand shifts, and certain dial options can command a premium regardless of metal.
