Join us in the Blog as we discover the history of the Oyster perpetual and some of the most popular Perpetuals.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual was introduced in 1931; it was the first Rolex watch, a perpetual movement. The word Oyster refers to the strong and reliable dustproof, waterproof case. Although Oyster isn't just referencing the case, it is also synonymous with other Rolex components such as Oyster steel, Oyster bracelet, Oyster clasp and Oyster Flex. The Oyster case is crafted from a solid steel block and is known for its superb and practical design. Every Rolex model besides the Cellini and the new 1908 features an Oyster case and can be clearly seen written on the dial. Perpetual refers to the watch's self-winding movement. When the 41mm Oyster perpetual was released in 2020, Rolex added a vibrant range of brightly coloured dials such as red, yellow, and Tiffany blue to the entire collection. Since their release, these brightly-coloured dials have been particularly sought after and hard to find due to the high demand. Rolex typically sticks to classic colours and designs, but this range was revamped with a youthful and bold hostile takeover.
In March of 2023, Rolex released the celebration dial, a dial exclusive to the Oyster Perpetual that combines all of the 2020 dials into one hand-painted dial. Since the release of this model, it has risen to the top of the market; a watch equipped with this dial will easily have at least double the retail value.
The best entry-level Rolex?
The Oyster Perpetual has a classic, refined and simple design. The model is widely regarded as one of the best entry-level Rolexes due to the relatively low retail price, and it is much easier to purchase from an authorised dealer. The range may have some of the cheapest and easiest Rolexes, but don't let that fool you. Have a look at the Rolex configurator website and see for yourself.
